Ever since his recording career took off in the early 1970s Rush has been at the commercial end of the soul/blues spectrum, even once cutting a massive disco hit in Philadelphia with producers Gamble & Huff. Throughout the '80s and '90s he's had several best-selling albums in the USA, mostly of a bawdy nature that is reflected by his OTT stage show with butt-shaking dancing girls. Although few of his records have been officially released in Britain he is well known to British R&B/blues fans via his dynamic appearances at UK and continental blues festivals: his show was also recently featured in 'The Road To Memphis' portion of the Martin Scorsese blues film series. This recording is a deliberately more traditional style blues album than his usual fare, prominently featuring Alvin Youngblood Hart on acoustic guitar and electric guitar. However, as the five-hour session progressed they ended up covering a variety of styles with their simple rhythm section of Rush's own bassist, Steve Johnson, and former Stax session drummer Charlie Jenkins. It turned out to be something beyong roots, something that's also really funky and modern, says Rush of the album.
