The ensemble Ratas De Viejo Mundo lets us discover the richness of the musical heritage of Parma, which developed into a leading musical centre under the Farnese, at the latest in the 16th century. Parma had already been an important musical centre since the Middle Ages, but it was in the middle of the 16th century that the city reached a highpoint as a leading musical centre.

Two significant events sparked the rise of its music scene: the marriage of Margaret of Parma and Ottavio Farnese, and the granting of the title of Duke of Parma to Ottavio's father, Pier Luigi. At the Farnese court, Flemish musicians like Cipriano de Rore, Josquin Persoens, and Gottfried Palmarts made a name for themselves, influencing the development of instrumental music and contributing to the genre of madrigals.
