After quietly building a reputation through their own self-released albums The Queensberry Rules caused a stir with their first release on the Fellside label (The Black Dog and Other Stories). One track, 2Sinking Town, has been played regularly on Mike Harding's Radio 2 programme Folk On Two and has been requested for magazine covermount CDs. Rock'n'Reel magazine said that they produced A dazzling brand of contemporary roots with pop and rock immediacywhile the power of their vocal harmonies adds to their obvious grasp of folk stylings. The American Dirty Linen magazine said they uphold the Ewan MacColl-Billy Bragg English folk tradition of giving working people a voice and making real the dramatic trajectory of their lives. They've been likened to Lindisfarne, The Strawbs and The Waterboys. This new CD brings more of the same. As their style has developed they are now entering a period of consolidation. All the hallmarks are there: literate songs, hook-laden tunes and spot-on harmonies. Their songs range from the anthemic I Still Believe In England (a positive slant on current gloom and doom about the state of the nation), songs about their own heritage (The Minnie Pit Disaster and Farewell), the remembered world of childhood (Landlocked), a drunken holiday in Helsinki (Little Saturday), contemporary news items (Have A Go Hero), a couple a traditional songs (Dol-li-a and High Germany) and a reworking of much requested song from a previous album (Preservers Song).
