Conspiratorial plots, affairs and intrigue surround the court of the legendary Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in Leo Fall's marvellous musical love story, Die Kaiserin. The libretto is deliberately not rooted in a historical context to reflect the requirements of the operetta genre around 1915 - to keep abreast of the times both in its music and content while avoiding all-too-obvious references to current political events.
