Schreker's Der Schmied von Gent (The Blacksmith of Ghent) is an opera full of stylistic pluralism and folk-like melodies. It is very unlike any of his previous works and his wealth of imagination and wit are simply inexhaustible. Written in the midst of a creative crisis, with two previous operas failing to please public taste at the time, he was more determined than ever to create an opera that would appeal to the masses.
