Throughout his life Ries occupied himself with the composition of string quartets, but it was not until 1816 that he presented three quartets to the public in his Op.70. With its renderings of interesting new discoveries the Schuppanzigh Quartet has earned renown as one of today's leading string quartets performing on original instruments.
