CPO is delighted to present another disc of music by Felix Weingartner, a much-revered conductor but long overlooked composer. CPO is currently exploring Weingartner's symphonic oeuvre with the Basel Symphony Orchestra - with the most astonishing results. The quest has revealed music of unprecedented mastery, resting on a classical and traditional foundation but also full of romantic expressivity and high suspense, with each work displaying its own unique and unmistakable stamp. With this release CPO begins its exploration of Weingartner's chamber music. Before pressing forward to his string quartets (project in progress), we present two wonderful ensemble pieces: the 'Sextet for Piano and Strings' of 1904 and the 'Octet for Clarinet', 'Horn', 'Bassoon', 'Strings', and''Piano' of 1924.
