This 10-CD set, released to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, is the second volume from Documents to feature Strauss's operas conducted by the great Karl Bhm. It includes complete recordings of Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Daphne, as well as selections from Salome, Arabella, and Capriccio. The casts feature many celebrated singers, including Lisa Della Casa, Irmgard Seefried, Rudolf Schock, Leonie Rysanek, Hans Hopf, Maria Reining and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
The artistic friendship between Richard Strauss and Karl Bhm is a very special chapter in the history of the interpretation of Strauss's works. Despite international successes, especially as a Mozart and Wagner conductor, the works of Richard Strauss were the focal point of Bhm's activity. He conducted 155 performances of Der Rosenkavalier, 104 of Elektra, 73 of Die Frau ohne Schatten and 89 of Ariadne auf Naxos. Strauss appreciated the respectful affection of the conductor, and dedicated his final opera Daphne to Bhm, who gave the premiere on 15 October 1938 at the Dresden Semper Opera.
